Our History

Founded Fall 2006

Four women struggling to understand the experiences of their children, met through an online support forum and quickly recognized the need for more than social support. Searching for community was soon replaced with a passion for making the world a better place for all gender variant kids and their families. Although the Transgender Movement was making legislative progress on local, state and federal levels, no organization was focusing on meeting the unique needs of transgender/gender variant youth and their families. After countless hours of conversation, TransYouth Family Allies (TYFA) was born to assist these families and their children with navigating the medical, legal, educational, administrative and social structures affecting their lives.

In the beginning, TransYouth Family Allies depended on the dedication of a small group of committed individuals to educate and advocate for the well-being of transgender, gender variant, gender fluid and gender questioning children, youth and their families. The majority of the original organizers remain in place as members of the board of directors. The size of the organization, as well as the number of volunteers involved continues to grow at a rapid pace. The addition of advocates and staff from across the country is allowing TYFA to offer expanded services and to work more efficiently toward accomplishing the goal of changing the world for these special children and their families.

According to an old African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Therefore, TYFA has become the village, fighting for the rights and happiness of every gender variant child in America. These children and families need not face discrimination and ignorance alone. We can support these families and accomplish our goals with help from others. As we begin writing the next chapter of TYFA’s history, we ask YOU…Will YOU be a part of our history? Will YOU help make the world a better place for these amazing kids? After all, difference isn’t wrong…it just is.
